The bishops of North Dakota, Archbishop Samuel J. Aquila (Archbishop Designate, Archdiocese of Denver,Diocesan Administrator, Diocese of Fargo) and Bishop David D. Kagan (Bismarck) have issued a joint letter urging North Dakota Catholics to support Measure 3.
The letter states: “Measure Three is needed, safe, and well-tested. It is based on the laws of at least 27 other states and the federal government. Legal experts from the Ivy League to the county courthouse agree that without it, state and local governments can infringe upon someone’s sincere religious beliefs for any reason, whether or not compelling. This is unacceptable. Our children and grandchildren deserve better.”
The letter also calls attention to the massive amounts of funding Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider, has spend to defeat the measure, stating “the low level of protection for religious freedom in North Dakota is the door for anti-life and anti-family forces to impose their ways on North Dakotans. That door must be closed.”
The letter concludes with a call to prayer and fasting and for support for Measure 3 on Tuesday’s ballot.
