North Dakota Catholic Conference Thanks Legislative Assembly and Governor for Enactment of Religious Freedom Law

The North Dakota Catholic Conference commends Governor Doug Burgum for signing House Bill 1136, the Religious Freedom Protection law.
The enactment of House Bill 1136 makes North Dakota the twenty-fifth state in the nation to adopt the “compelling interest standard” for protecting religious freedom by legislation. The standard gives all persons, no matter what their faith, legal protection for their sincerely held beliefs without unduly interfering with the government’s legitimate duties.
The conference also applauds the North Dakota Legislative Assembly for passing this long-needed legislation by nearly unanimous votes in both chambers. The passage of House Bill 1136 reflects our state’s commitment to protecting the religious freedom of all North Dakotans.
